Ethiopia’s first Bitcoin miner, QRB Labs introduced mining PPAs to companies and government - a concept that brings Bitcoin into their national energy policy. QRB Labs’ mission is to hit 100GW power generation, a metric that places Ethiopia right around the 1kW per person global generation average. “Taking world population against global generation capacity gives you about 1kw per person. This resultant virtuous cycle brings Bitcoin miners to remote locations producing surplus power, reinvesting the generated revenue into further generation, transmission and grid growth. At the right price, Bitcoin mining is the ignition switch that ushers a country’s energy into economic prosperity. Bitcoin mining data centers co-locate well at stranded energy sub-stations, turning excess generation into hard revenue that loops back into the grid to fund transmission, subsidize pricing, expand generation or otherwise improve the grid. More mining → more revenue → more capacity → more growth. Each unused kWh of electricity equals 40 cents of GDP. The right feedback loop can monetize today’s excess generation capacity, potentially adding $50B to the country’s GDP.
